The best maps available for this area are the OS (ordnance Survey) maps available is a number of scales from those showing footpaths and invididual houses up to the routemaster maps that are mostly only used by long distance drivers.

OS maps can be bought in most book shops such as W.H. Smiths, Borders etc.

For a simpler map, go to Tourist Information - either in the town or online.

Google Earth maps are reasonably good too (you can get aerial photo's here too). They have various scales available via a zoom tool. You can view map, photo or map over photo.

What is the project? KNowing the area I expect farming and/or drainage must form part of it since the area used to flood quite badly. Although I am the other side of the world now I used to cycle all around the Newark area as a teen.

Go with the OS 1:25,000 scale map for the project (a good map makes the project easier and less of a drag) and back it up with aerial shots from Google Earth, then you can match symbols on the map to actual buildings, rivers, railways. canals etc. on the photos. This can all be interesting, even if you don't find it to be fun but it is more fun than maths or learning lists of French verbs!
