I was recently talking to a friend of mine online (I don't know him in real life, but I met him playing a videogame online) and he was telling me about how he doesn't have any real-life friends and that it's hard for him to make friends because he's so self-conscious about how he looks and all that (he's like your standard case of the videogame geek with acne).
Anyway, he went on to tell me more about how he hasn't really done anything with his life after high school, and he's just going to a community college not knowing what he wants to do in life, still living at home with mom, and all sorts of other depressing things. He spends almost all of his time at home in his room playing this online video game and thinks his life is really dreary and that there's no purpose (though I don't know if he is suicidal or not: I hope not) and that he might just sign his life away to the Army to be a part of something and not feel so lonely all the time.
I'm no therapist: what should I tell him?

"No" Didn't you hear Marvin Gaye say
"War is not the answer!"
More importantly is what Jesus Christ said:
Matthew 26:52 . . .Then Jesus said to him: “Return your sword to its place, for all those who take the sword will perish by the sword.
This is war time. If you join the army you will be at war.
There is no honor in disobeying GOD.
Jesus Christ is your friend; listen to his voice.

Yes. FTA. It does not always mean F*** the Army, but it could mean Fun, Travel, and Adventure.
I think the Army would provide structure to your friend's life, give him some training he could use in the real world [they train in matters other than light weapons infantry], and teach him to better interact with other people. It would force him to grow up really fast, and become self-reliant and focused, and offer the experience of teamwork.

The number one leverage for man to succed or fail is his/her mind. When you think negative in life then you are. But you can change your outlook into what you want if you have the principle that you and you alone is the master of your own self.
To the problem of your life you are the only solution and to the question of your life you are the only answer. Happiness should come from within yourself. Anywhere you are, anytime in any situation if you strive to be a mature person, you can say with full satisfaction in season or out of season that you are what you are by the grace of God. (Read the Bible)

Tell him to stay far, far away from the army. Then maybe he can work on his self-confidence by taking care of the acne and attempting to socialize.

Tell him he will absolutley hate the army if he's going in for the wrong reasons.
But, heck, maybe it's just what he needs. Maybe he's just mulling this stuff around, just bouncing it off you.
If you're his only friend, he might be the type to take your advice very seriously, so be careful what advice you give, maybe just listen.

he shouldn't join the army cause he's bored and lonely.
if he want to join the army for the "right" reasons (whatever they are....) then yeah, alot of people are caught not knowing what they really want to do with thier lives, so it's just a case I think of aiming for what you'd like and trying your best to reach that goal.

tell him "NO" It's a horrible place, if he is a nerd that likes to play video games and stay in his room all day, then he should keep it like that
ARMY IS THE LOWEST ANYONE CAN GO
(Cool, I only made 1 spelling error, and that was video games)
