I Recently (the 17th) had an abscess on my tonsil, i had to go to the hospital and i got my first IV and it scared me.

The next day (the 18th) they sent me to get it drained. This was scary and painful seeing how they used a syringe while i was wide awake.

I went back yesterday for a check up, and the doctor said that on a scale of 1-4 my tonsils are 3+. And he told me i need to get them removed or else i'll just get another abscess.

Im terrified. Im getting them removed july 24th, and im scared to death. Like I wanna cry kind of scared.

What if the anestheic doesnt work?
How bad Will the Pain be?
What should i expect?

I really am scared to death so i want the truth, not candy coated.

It is natural to be scared of surgery so I empathize. As for the anesthetic, the anesthesiologist and his team do a pretty good job of making sure that the anesthesia not working is a rare occurrence thanks to technology coming in to play that will let them know if a patient is starting to wake up.

As for the pain, I asked my aunt about that when she had hers removed and she said it was pretty uncomfortable. By drinking things that are pretty cold (in addition to taking medicine prescribed by the dr) can help the pain.

Swallowing will be a challenge for a couple days as will talking.

You can find additional information about tonsillectomy at WebMD too.

And it's quite all right to cry. And please let your dr know how much this scares you so that they can do everything that they can to make this less scary for you as well.

And please ask the dr as many questions as you need in order to feel comfortable with this.

I wish you well on the recovery from your surgery after you have it.

I was 6 and it was back in the 1960s, but I remember that I got lots of jello and popsickles. I was in the hospital three days and in a crib! Nowadays, I believe it is an outpatient procedure, you go in, they knock you out, remove the tonsils, wake you up, you go home with a sore throat. It should heal in a couple days to a week and taking something like Tylenol 3. I don't think you should be too afraid! You should be thankful that you are having this done while you are young!

I had my tonsils out when I was 18 and had the same fears.

All I remember is counting backwards from 20 and only getting to 15! Then I woke up in a recovery room. Although there was pain, it was minimal. Unfortunately, the pain pill they gave me was huge and hurt to swallow as did eating in general. If I took the pill without eating, I threw up. Which was more painful than eating. In the end, I didn't take the pills, just ate enough to survive, and lost about 8 lbs in one week.

Overall, the experience was quick and harmless. Nothing to be afraid of.

You should expect to go under, and wake up in recovery all groggy, and you may feel some pain, but they will soon pump you full of drugs that make you feel happy, and they will prolly give you ice cream, and wait on you hand and foot. The pain should not be too bad, they give you drugs for it.

As for the anesthetic, yes, there have been EXTREAMLY rare cases where the patcient was awake for the entire surgery, and could feel everything. It has happened, but it is soooo RARE that your shoulden't worry about it, seriously. Surgery is no big deal, especially a tonselectomy. They are right in and right out. Calm down a bit. Good luck to you!

You'll be fine! The anesthesia will work, so don't worry about that. Sure, your throat will be sore, but it really isn't that bad, trust me. In a couple days you'll feel totally fine. And getting it done once and for all means you never have to worry about it again. Good luck! It'll all be over and done with before you know it.

The chance of the anaesthetics not working is minimal to none. Your throat will be quite painfull after surgery, but you do get to suck on popsicles alot. It will be over before you know it.

they still do that these days? I thought taking out one's tonsils would cause a decrease in the human immune system...
