This is the eternal question. Indeed, what is life? Life could be existence or a set of electrical spurts that move a person to think, imagine, create. I have heard on some sci fi show, it said that life is to be able to create another life. But then what of those who choose to remain childless? They have life. Life is what you make of it, no more and no less.

Seriously though, the question becomes harder when you look at sci-fi movies like "Bicentennial Man". People can answer along the lines of "Life is this, that, and this other thing", but then people can counteract that with "So if I build a machine that has those aspects you listed, is it 'alive'?" That often causes people to rethink the answer.
