Despite the controversy, Barry Bonds has made huge contributions to the game of baseball. He certainly deserves to be a first ballot hall of famer, and I believe that he will be. It would be difficult to deny the all time homerun king.

Maybe a third or fourth definitely not the first.
The big reason is that he doesn't meet the 50% of the voting criteria that is entirely subjective. The HOF ballot is 50% subjective and 50% objective.
Rules of Election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by Members of the Baseball Writers'Association of America (BBWAA)
section 5 states:
Voting-Voting shall be based on the players record ,playing ability , sportsmanship, character , integrity and contributions to the team(s) for which he played."
It doesn't matter at all whether or not the substances he used were legal. What matters is that he did use something and that something gave him an unfair advantage over his competitors. That fact that he did use something repeatedly shows a lack of character, integrity and sportsmanship on his part.
The BBWAA doesn't have to prove that he violated the letter of the law to deny Bonds admission to the HOF ;violating the spirit of the law will more than suffice.
Edit
Mojo man I can't really offer you a good explanation for that.
It may be that except for Cy Young's 511 wins the home run record is the most highly regarded in baseball and there is more than a nagging suspicion that the new owner of that record is not going to come by it honestly. That knowledge leaves many people, including myself, with a sort of sick feeling about the whole thing.
So maybe the BBWAA is in a no contest posture where they realize that they are powerless to stop this travesty from happening But when the do have the power to determine who gets in the HOF they will use it to deliver a morality message saying that they don't approve of Bonds behavior.

No. He should not be in the Hall of Fame at all. Barry Bonds has cheated his way through baseball worse than the 1919 "Black Sox".
Barry Bonds' image has changed since 1986. He went from Mr. Small puny guy to Mr. Schwarzenegger. This man is an abomination of baseball, he not only needs an asterix next to his name in the record books, he needs any records cleaned off.
Barry Bonds is a known substance abuser. He should not be in the Hall of Fame for the rest of existence. If he ever makes it, I will stop caring about baseball.

He is a first ballot hall of famer in my opinion, I don't care if he stepped up the the plate with a needle full of steroids still dripping out of his bicep! He was a hall of famer before the home runs anyway - Also, steroids are NOT going to put the bat on the ball...the player does (unless he's shooting them into his eye and they can slow down a 95 mph fastball.
He will NOT be a first ballot hall of famer because of the political climate.

Seems to me that if the sportswriters connect Balco Barry with Big Mac, and others, and McGwire wasn't elected on the first ballot, why should Bonds be?
In addition to this... if you really want to know what I think, he probably will be because by the time Bonds' turn comes up... McGwire will be in the Hall of Fame. And then the noise will be... well they elected McGwire, it would be racist if Bonds isn't elected.
Take my word for it... the Hall of Fame isn't tarnished enough. There's more to come.

Yes, he will most definately be a first ballod hall of famer. That is unless that one guy, you know that mindless ape, ohh yea his name's Bud Selig, decides to ban him from being voted in. which sounds like something the guy would do... here's a secret, part of the reason Barry Bonds is in the situation that he is in lies in the color of his skin. Yes, it does. A bunch of rich white buisiness men own baseball, and they hate to see a black man "ruining" the sport of baseball. Don't tell anyone I told you that. I hope Bud Selig gets testicular cancer.

How can we prove you wrong? Like you, we'll have to wait and see when it comes his time
I personally believe he'll have a hard time getting in.
