Digestion is a very individualized process. Everyone's body reacts differently to the stress of exercise after eating, whether it be swimming, running, cycling, playing basketball, etc. The "wait one hour" suggestion is basically a way for people to cover their bases in CASE someone's stomach doesn't like being jarred around after eating. Like the poster above me said, there is absolutely NO supporting scientific evidence for this claim.
If your body is more sensitive to cramping after meals than you may get a cramp. However if your body is less sensitive or normal chances are very much against cramping. Factors affecting digestion are not clear across the board. If you want to swim immediately after you eat go for it!
Personally if I DON'T eat right before I swim I get hungry and start to bonk after only a few miles. However, my body has been trained in endurance sports and athletics since I was a child and I have very high metabolism and a strong stomach. It's all about your body...
There's only one way to find out if the 15-minute rule will apply to you or not - GO FOR IT!!! ( =

Depends on what you eat and how much did you eat. And eating before swimming won't caused cramps, instead it will caused some stomach problems. But if you eat like 2 slices of wheat bread with milk, then you need to have at least 30-60 minutes rest before dipping to the water. Usually cramps is caused by lack of water while swimming in a hot sunny day. Always bring a bottle of water during your swimming session.

I doubt it. Im on a swim team and I've actually eaten lots at swim meets in between swimming, sometimes up to 500 yards after eating a sandwich a minute before, and I've never cramped up. I've even eaten skittles WHILE swimming lol.

No. Thats moms way of saying she doesn't feel like going to the pool. Now if you mean serious swimming like training or competition. Yes, you will cramp after eating just like you would if you ran right after eating.

Sgt. Crabbs doesn't know what she is talking about. Sharks don't eat people.
You may or may not cramp up if you swim after you eat...it is so individual.
I always thought that rule was overrated.

depends what you eat.
certain foods like energy bars or fruits might not give you cramps.
but heavy foods or bread aren't recommended for swimmers to eat before swimming

Petey,
Please listen to me, this is an old wife's tale and there is no scientific evidence that supports this theory at all.
