You should understand it because it is happening now.It deals with who ever controls historical records and who controls the teaching of history.If you are thinking about what may happen in the future the only thing you can make a decision on what course of action you take is based on something that happened in the past then the person who controls that information is going to influence the decision you make. Orwell is talking about the ultimate control in a totalitarian society.
