A compact car would be like a Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Fiesta etc.... a small car yet not too small to not be able to fit in it (like a sports car)

That is my understanding of it anyway...

Go to the auto trader website or similar and you should be able to find compact cars there.

The European market doesn't use the term "Compact".

The segments in the European market are (with appropriate examples you should recognise from the Japanese market):

A-segment (or Mini-car segment) - Daihatsu Cuore
B-segment (Small-car or Supermini segment) Toyota Yaris (Vitz), Honda Jazz (Fit), Nissan Micra (March)
C-segment (Lower-medium segment) Volkswagen Golf, Toyota Corolla/Auris
D-segment (Upper-Medium segment) Volkswagen Passat, Honda Accord
E-segment (Executive segment) Audi A6, BMW 5-series, Lexus GS
E2 or F-segment (Luxury Segment) Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS
Mini-MPV segment - Renault Scénic, Toyota Corolla Verso (Spacio), Honda F-RV (Edix)
MPV segment - Renault Espace, Toyota Previa (Estima)
Sports segment - any sports coupés or convertibles, from the Nissan Micra C+C to the Bugatti Veyron
SUVs - from small SUVs (Suzuki Jimny, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V) to large SUVs (Toyota Landcruiser) and Luxury SUVs (Range Rover)

The segments are categorised mostly on size, rather than on price or engine size.
Hatchbacks outsell sedans in the B and C segments.

Tongue in cheek - too large on the outside and too small on the inside!
Interior seems to be designed for 2 adults and not quite enough room in the back to stop the kids squabbling - 2 adults in the back need to be good friends.
Luggage space totally inadequate for the number of passengers it is supposed to be carrying.
Small engine which is just about adequate to climb average height hills, but struggles with steep gradients, especially when it has full passenger complement.
But - for a single driver, easy to park, low on fuel consumption and sufficient room for the weeks shopping.
