depends on what you are trying to prove your seperated for. (Insurance, credit protection?) Some states will let you waive the filing fees if your income is low enough.

When I got divorced, I could not afford the filing fees as well, but I was able to get them waived. I did everything myself (well okay, I did have some help from my mother) and did not need a lawyer. But I had no children and no property to fight over, so it was a bit easier.

You don't have to wait two years if you can prove adultery or that the marriage is beyond repair due un reasonable behaviour.. The costs are likely to be the same whether you wait or whether you proceed immediately.

If you must.... and there are no children or property involved, you can do a 'do-it-yourself' divorce. Go to a public library and find the forms for submittting the proper papers to a judge. Hardly costs anything.
If there are children and/or property... sorry, I don't know what to say.
