If it were back labor you would feel like you've pinched a nerve in your back and it would feel crampy in your stomach. You may want to go in, since nothing is rhythmic then it's probably early stages but it's still good to get checked out. They might send you home but at least you'll know where you stand with your labor and they'll tell you what you might feel to come back.

Hah! I am exactly the same! I asked this a while ago and I rang the hospital. Im 39 and 4 as well and exactly the same symptoms. The midwife told me that pressure on your vaginal area is good because it means the baby is down and that the back pain is because our babies are what they refer to as "stargazers" lol! This is that their back is against ours. I can't feel rhythmic contractions either and I went for a walk and it just brought on a bit of diahorrea, i was advised to take some panadol and have a sleep! If the contractions or back pain get any worse after a shower or a sleep call again!

Sounds like early labour to me.
Uncomfortable, to say the least, this is what happened to me. Feels like really bad period pain with a bit of diarrhea and an ache in your back that just won't go away no matter what you do with yourself.
This started for me on a Monday (I was 39 weeks and 6 days) and by Tuesday morning (my due date) I was so uncomfortable and tired I couldn't take it anymore - I went to the hospital and they sent me home and said to wait until the contractions became more regular and/or my water broke. They said to take paracetamol painkillers and just walk around or get down on all fours and breathe deeply to try and take the edge off.
Wednesday morning came round and nothing had changed and I was in so much discomfort at 6am I went in to the hospital and said I couldn't take it any more. So the nurse exammined me and while she was feeling around I lost my mucus plug and she noted I was fingertip dilated - on my way at least. They kept me in and at about 10am the midwife broke my water and my son was born at 7pm.
Best of luck.

I would never go to the hospital if I were pregnant, especially if I were in labour. What if you got stuck there and the baby ended up being born there? (Probably wouldn't happen, but why stress yourself out anymore?) If I were you, I wouldn't go much further than for a walk around the block.
The cramping and back pain (oh, the joys of back labour) are totally normal, and they would probably just send you home from the hospital anyway. You can go, and check, to make sure everything is okay.
If you're really worried, call your midwife. If she suspects anything is really wrong, she will come to your house at 2am to make sure you are okay. A good midwife will. A bad midwife will send her on-call associate in her place.
Anyhow, turn down the lights, light a candle, warm up some lavender, sit on your birthing ball, or take a warm bath! Mammals usually go into labour at night. Most things that hurt and are annoying (in a crampy kind of way) are a normal part of labour.

Is this your first baby? I have had 5 children. I was in mild labor for 10 days with my 3 child. I understand how you are feeling. Relax, if you are tense it slows down labor and makes it harder for you to dialate and does nothing but make you sour. Take a warm bathe to claim down. Maybe if it is labor it will start becoming more productive. Good Luck

i also suffered the same way... & at that moment it is very difficult to say do this and that..
I just went to the hospital, and they made me to sleep.. according to the elders it is better to try to walk so that you can have a normal delivery..
But believe me the pain was so bad.. and after two days pain i had to do c-section...
I feel you do go.. at the doctor check the progress of the baby.. it gves you a moral support..that every thing is fine..with both of you..
All the best..

If in doubt, get it checked out. Not a bad slogan when your pregnant. Its your and your baby's health and you always wise to err on the side of caution. Why not give the hospital a ring and see what they say? They might ask you to come in, or give you advice to cope with the pain.
Best of luck, you're in the home stretch now.

you may be experiencing back labor. I would go in because I had the same thing and as soon as the admitted me, i got in the bed and my water broke! Watch for any bloody show, and if your water breaks get there immediately! But I would go now. Good Luck and Congrats
