bob dylan was the best songwriter ever...just listen to some of his stuff, absolutely timeless. songs like 'blowin in the wind', 'the hurricane', 'shelter from the storm', 'a hard rains a-gonna fall', 'positively 4th street', 'lily, rosemary and the jack of hearts', 'times they are a changing', 'tangled up in blue', 'subterranean homesick blues', 'don't think twice its all right', 'like a rolling stone', 'all along the watchtower', 'desolation row'....i'm leaving out quite a lot but those are enough to trump anything lennon has done. and imagine? come on??!!! the songs a freaking communist anthem if you actually listen to it!

Both of theses guys have written some great lyrics...but for me...hands down...no doubt...Bob Dylan.
Lennon individually wrote a handful of great tracks...but most of his song writing legacy is intertwined w/ Paul McCartney...so I can't give Lennon full credit on those tracks.
On the flip side, Dylan's songs were almost entirely his own...
Dylan: "Tangled up in Blue" "Stuck Inside Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again"
Lennon: "(Just) Gimme Some Truth" "Jealous Guy"

John Lennon- Across The Universe
Bob Dylan- Like A Rollling Stone
Who is or was better? It's like trying to decide which fruit is healthier. As for Dylan's influence on The Beatles, they both influenced each other.

Dylan, as measured the two by way of high quality and volume. that's no knock on Lennon, of direction, yet there in simple terms is no one who compares to Dylan. Who else has continually placed out great textile for a a million/2-century?

Lennon said a lot in a few words, Dylan said a lot with many more words - he didn't run dry after a few verses it just kept coming out. They both were able to paint pictures with their lyrics. People forget about Dylans melodies - his tunes were fantastic.

Dylan was the better writer, but Lennon was better at singing and recording his own work......so many people have covered Dylan and in my opinion, most have done a better job than him
Dylan - I Shall Be Released
Lennon - Imagine, Working Class Hero, Instant Karma

Dylan, no doubt. His are so great that every so often scholars debate whether or not he should be considered for a Nobel Prize for Literature. He had a profound and direct influence on an entire generation's political thinking.
He is also the reason Paul McCartney and John Lennon started to write thoughtful lyrics. Prior to meeting Dylan they mainly stuck to the "bubble gum" lyrics of "Please Please Me" and "She Loves You (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah)."
When they sat down one day with Bob Dylan he told them politely but bluntly, "Your music is great but you don't SAY anything."
After that, Lennon started writing songs like "Nowhere Man" and later, of course, "Imagine."
