Hi, I was wondering if I can replace the Celeron M 380 in my laptop (Intel 910 GM/GMS chipset) with a Celeron D 345?

I realize this is going from a laptop CPU to a desktop CPU, but they are both for Socket 478, and both are around the same voltage (1.3v).

Thanks!

The Celeron M 380 has a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 21W, while the Celeron D 345 has a TDP of 73W. To put that in plain English, the Celeron D puts out more than 3 times as much heat, and we are talking about a laptop, a confined space with limited cooling abilities. I think you can probably see where I am going with this, so no, its not going to work. Also, they actually aren't the same socket anyway, Celeron M is socket 479, and they have different FSB speeds, but the heat issue would have eliminated any chance of doing it anyway.

Putting a more powerful chip into an unventilated box could lead to erratic behavior and crisp the electronics. You might be surprised at the size of fan they put on top of that chip inside of a desktop. They make a desktop docking station for laptops with cooling fans. You might consider waiting until the fall to make your lobotomy and adding on the docking base before the following summer.

Same socket, same voltage? Sounds OK.
Check with the manufacturer or a reliable store, have them found out if you don't know how.
I was just wondering if the change is worth any gain you might get, if any?
