This is hard, since most people have different tastes in music... for the most part I'd say:
1. The World - by Nightmare, Death Note (a heavy rock/techno song)
2. Realize - by Nami Tamaki, Gundam Seed (Fast paced, semi techno song)
3. Innocent Sorrow - Abingdon Boys School, D-Grayman (Nu-rock)
4. Sanctuary (or perhaps the Japanese version Passion) - Utada Hikaru, Kingdom Hearts 2 (technically not an anime song, but great nonetheless... Slow, love song)
5. Simple and Clean (or Japanese Hikari) - Utada Hikaru, Kingdom Hearts (read no 5)
6. Rolling Star - Yui, Bleach (Typical J-rock)
7. Heart of Sword - T.M. Revolution, Rurouni Kenshin (Techno/rock)
The problem isn't necessarily looking for good songs, it would be whether or not he's seen the anime it's based on... I could think of a few other great anime songs, but unless he's seen them, i doubt he'd appreciate them, the ones I've included are songs from some of the more well known animes, so odds are he would have already heard/seen them.

I personally love Bleach openings and endings, Bleach is a popular anime, and my favorites are D-tecnolife - UVERworld, High And Mighty Color - Ichirin No Hana, Rei Fu- Life is Like a Boat, Younha - Houkiboshi, Aqua Timez-Alone, and if you want it to be romantic, then I suggest Sakura Hiyori, a song about lovers meeting each other in middle school. ^^ Oh and thats by Mai Hoshimura.

Im a big anime fan as well and this is my opinion. Many anime fans also like j-pop and j-rock. try some miyavi or dir en grey. something sweet.
ps, try the ranma1/2 theme song =] its always great.
