I don't exactly know when this superstition started long ago. It was believed that during the time from when you first sneezed and until you took your first breath afterward, your soul was temporarily leaving your body. So, it was felt that during this brief few seconds of departure, one should quickly say, "God Bless You" in order to protect your soul from being snatched by the Devil while it was out of your body and vulnerable for just those few seconds.

For myself, it is something I believe in -- even if I am alone and sneeze, I quickly say, "God Bless Me" !!

because everytime you sneeze your heart skips a beat,so it was a saying that was made up of "god bless you",because for that second that your heart skips a beat you can die but god gives life,so thats why when someone sneezes they say god bless you...

i read somewhere way back that people believed that when someone sneezed they were getting rid of evil spirits. So when you sneezed they wanted to bless the person who sneezed so they wouldn't get the evil spirits back.

Hello,

During the plagues of Europe, mainly the black death people who began to get the disease would start with a cough and the response was, God bless you; more or less a quick prayer.
