If you were to be smashed into something hard from backwards, or something hit you and your ribs broke, would there be a chance, or would they be able to break through the skin and cause an open fracture with the ribs sticking out?
As all of the organs are kept WITHIN the ribcage, they wouldn't be damaged right?

Has this ever happened to anyon? Or does anyone know about this sort of injury please?
What would it feel like exactly?

By the way, this hasn't happened to me, but i am writing a novel and need peoples opinions please!

A crushing chest injury does exactly that. Happens in car accidents [ behind the wheel with no airbags, mostly ], industrial accidents, earthquakes if a building collapses on you, etc.
All your organs can be damaged within the chest cavity - a broken rib is sharp, and depending on which rib and what angle it broke at, you could get a punctured and collapsed lung, punctured heart, or lacerated liver or spleen, or torn aorta - any of which could kill you.
Think Princess Diana.
1] it would hurt like hell if you were conscious, which wouldn't last long, because you wouldn't be able to breathe.
2] many to most people don't survive crushing chest injuries.

i've never seen an open rib fracture. er let me rephrase that. i've never seen an open rib fracture on a living person. ok that's more accurate. if somebody was struck with enough force to cause that type of injury they would have severe damage to the underlying organs. you could expect to see aortic, subclavian, cardiac, splenic and other abdominal injuries, pneumothorax etc. the pain would be extreme and is aggravated by difficulty breathing and coughing.

i suppose it would be possible to break a rib and get a compound fracture, breaking through your skin. Most likely, a badly broken rib might possibly puncture a lung, causing the lung to collapse. besides the immense pain, you would have difficulty breathing also. it has never happened to me. good luck with your novel.

I heard of getting a ruptured spleen from being hit with something with exessive force. I've heard of getting a punctured lung/heart from rib fracture. I've seen a guy with a pole going through his chin out the top of his head before.
