Tank tracks are designed to distribute the heavy weight of a tank across more surface area for better traction, especially in muddy/sandy conditions. They are also very durable.

Because there are many sprung wheels transfering the weight of the tank to all sedgments of the track and the track, while acting as a chain in one direction is very stiff in width so the forces are spread out over the ground allowing the tonnes of weight to have a relatively low force per unit area. Because there is a large area, when the drive sprockets pull the chain, there is a large amount of friction for a good grip on hills, etc.

an army tank is about 60/ton on or about.and it not a chain. it is call a track it come in sections and put to gather by using center guides and end connectors the reason for tanks using track is the tank can go were other motor vehicles can not go.and for me it was fun to drive.and a hell of a lot of work.
