Iraq had an insurgency before we invaded. It wasn't Al Qeada it was the mahdi army that was run by Al Sadeer.

Al Sadeer was a Shi'ite and those in control in Iraq were Sunni. The reason Al Sadeer has so much power now and before is because he fought against Sadaam and his Sunni tyranny, and is responsible for helping many Shi'ite eek out a living.

People who think Iraq was some peaceful stable country before we got there are just ignorant. The media didn't report on what was going on because mostly people didn't care.

im not an expert on this...but al qeada is a terrorist group, and has always been in iraq (as well as a few other countries). when we invaded iraq, they were already there waiting for us, and maybe some came from other countries, but most were already there. I would say most of the insurgents are associated with al qeada, but some may be normal citizens. hope this helps

I am not really sure how many were there to begin with or how many foreign fighters have entered the country. I would think that Al Qeada likely has two main goals. Of course, kill Americans is one of them but the second is to stir up sectarian violence and ignite a civil war (which they have been doing quite well at). It is no secret that Shiites and Sunnis are not exactly best pals.

"How much of the total insurgant force compromises Al Qeada fighters."

No one really knows.

Before the US invaded Iraq, there was no Al-Qaeda in Iraq. The US invaded Iraq on the pretense of Iraq possessing WMDS. Al-Qaeda was not present. It is now.

the best way to answer this would be through the 9-11 report... which said they were largely based in Afghanistan... and have seemingly been pushed mainly into Pakistan...

as for Iraq... this is about the only time I've seen anyone with a possible clue talking...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/16/AR2006111601509.html

it says there are about 30,000 insurgents... which about 1,300 are non-Iraqi... and that's counting Iranians, al-queda and everything else... so that's like 5 percent of the total insurgency... according to army intel... pretty small amount

Terrorism existed in Iraq long before we came here. The argument that Saddam hated terrorists is bogus. He loved terrorists. He just hated anyone who disagreed with him. Since some terrorists disagreed with him, he hated those particular terrorists.
