With the two most recent major recalls being Chinese made products, the statistics show that fully 60% of major recalls in the US right now are Chinese made products. Also, having personally experienced the crappiness of Chinese made products, even on the level of crappy paper towels, will they learn that Americans want QUALITY not just price?
The Japanese made their transition from "crappy" to quality, with price, with the help of W. Edwards Deming.

Is there hope for China? Is there a Deming for China?

truthseekr... can't figure out why you're the only one who thinks the question is absurd. From toothpaste to tires to pet food, "bad" Chinese imports are harming our economy and lives. How is this absurd? And you don't ALWAYS "get what you pay for." There are many top quality products at good/decent prices, and some very lousy ones at top prices. Don't judge a book by it's cover!
Thanks to others who have taken the question seriously for some very good answers with aspects I hadn't considered. It is a complex issue.

Sorry to say China manufactures what Corporate America requests of them, unfortunately big corps. want something for nothing making their profits larger so not only does corporate America make big bucks but also their stock holders.

If we Americans want quality products, why are most consumer goods a race to the bottom in regards to quality and durability? We dispose of more consumer goods each year than our grandparents ever imagined owning. This has led most Americans to not try to repair anything or even consider the quality, durability and repairability when making a purchase.
Part of Japan's ability to compete on price was a much stronger dollar then than now, much less competition for raw materials (India and PRC were nowhere near as industrialized) and very cozy financing at about 1% interest. While Deming had good ideas on the manufacturing process, the economics were another matter. China's currency has been undervalued in relation to the dollar for about a decade-recent efforts are a step in the right direction but in a true floating market the "real" should be worth more dollars.
With 300 million Chinese moving to cities/industrial centers, they have to make lots of stuff-both for themselves and export. If no one bought it, they would have only two options: Make something else or make it better.

Deming said, “…when people and organizations focus primarily on costs (often dominant/typical human behavior), costs (due to not minimizing waste, ignoring amount of rework occurring, taking staff for granted, not rapidly resolving disputes, and failing to notice lack of product improvement—plus, over time, loss of customer loyalty) tend to rise and quality declines over time.”
I think that Americans need to consider this more than the Chinese. (If we don’t want to lose the jobs we still have here anyway.) We hold our own farmers and factories to a much higher standard than we do China’s. (Many times they have no standard to meet…) Also, the Chinese can beat us because they work for a smaller paycheck. And in the long run, they will win our jobs and our factories too—because we are paying them—to the detriment of ourselves. What’s wrong with this?
The problem is that when we buy Chinese products, we put American businesses out of operation; which in turn puts American citizens out of work.
I'm not saying we should never buy Chinese products. However, when products are "expensive", (car, TV etc.) buy American. Instead of "sparing a dime" and dropping it into the tin can of the guy who is out of work on the street corner, keep him working in the first place--and buy American!
If we don’t wake up and start buying quality American products, it’s only a matter of time (as Deming said) before the Chinese raise the costs on their products and the American way of life as we know it will be gone--because most of America's companies will be gone…

The Chinese deliver what American sales operations design and engineer for them which ranges from junk to jets. When the Chinese design their own stuff, then maybe your question can be answered. Deming, after all, was an American and his information is available to all. Right now there are thousands of small "factories" in China and there aren't enough experts on Deming in the world to change them.

No they will not. We buy their products because they are cheap and that is about all you can buy today. If they were not cheap we would of course buy American Made Products.
The cheap goods that China is pumping out are cheap for several reasons. Cheap to almost no cost labor, No worker rights, No enforced guidelines for polluting and waste, corner cutting by using cheap and sometime dangerous materials, and free power, no taxes, etc etc.
The best answer is to try not to buy Chinese products, buy American if you can. Our companies could not compete with the labor and cost of doing business in China

The absurdity of your question is based on your lack of common sense.
The reason 60% of recalls are China products is because Wal-Mart, Macy's, and countless other retailers are full of China products, along with parts put in cars to the motor in your USA washing machine.
China makes junk as well as quality parts and products, just like the USA, Japan, Mexico, Canada and dozens of others that we trade with.
If that wasn't the case, say bye-bye to your computer in lets say -------------- oohhhhhh 15 minutes.
I hope you get my drift and stop posting this silly line of questions
Peace
Jim

You do realize we (the USA) have an absolutely enormous trade deficit with China. Apparently we are managing to consume what they send us and then some.
