On all the islands and around Athens the beaches all have the small pebbles on them. Do the larger islands like Rhodes, Crete, Santorini etc (excuse if spelled wrong) have the pebbles also? Where is the best beach near to Athens without using the ferry but a taxi or city bus?

Even if there is sea in Athens, i would suggest you to do an excursion to an island...The sea in Athens, is not so good, as it would be in the islands..
Creta has wonderful beaches, I dont know about Santorini, but Aegean sea always is beautiful and famous ..
Concerning Rhodes, you know my opinion, needless to say it again, the sea has 3 colours...and you can find everything, sand, small stones, whatever is better for you(i dont like sand so much)...

The organised beaches around Athens are sandy - pebbles have been removed. But it would be better to head of further off, i.e. near Sounio, pebbles or no pebbles.. All 3 islands you mentioned do have sandy beaches, it only depends where you go. i.e on Rodos if you go to the Antony Quinn beach, no it is not sandy, but if you go to Afandou it has only sand (in and out). Santorini has more stones in and out, black sand and deep waters. Try Vlyhada, it was super years ago. And well, Crete is huge, just ask the locals to recommend you a beach, it really depends on where you are.

Most of the islands have sandy beaches. Rhodes, Kos, Naxos, Mykonos and Paros have the best ones, plus the Ionian islands. Also Andros and Milos, I forgot. About beaches near Athens, you can try near Sounio, for example Punta Zeza was a beach I really liked, but that was about 20 years ago (my god, I just counted them, it' s too much) when I was at summer camp there.

dvatwork, you are wrong, because the sandy beaches in Greece are wonderful!

Take the tram down from Syntagma to the beach, you will find plenty and they do have sand. The pebble beaches may not be as comfortable but since it is very often very windy, you won't get the sticky sand in your face! Have a nice holiday!

dvatwork is right, take water shoes! Although you may get a few more stares than normal (lol) I guess it's worth not stepping in the pebbles...why don't you want the pebbles anyways?

You need to have a good read through this lot as they'll tell you about the beaches when they stayed there.

Well, if you are looking for soft sand beaches like in Cayman or Punta Cana, you won't find them in Greece. Take those water shoes with you so the pebbles don't hurt your feet.
