Not sure what the laws are anywhere else, but in Canada, if you specifically ask a telemarketer to remove you from the list, they have to, and after doing that they often actually listen when I say "I am not interested in talking to you"
Other ones I have used are:
- "No, I have a relative in an upper management position with your competitor, and get (phone service for example) for free"
- "No, I don't need that, I am immortal" (for funeral pre-arrangement calls - my father taught me that one)
- If I give up and hang up on them, I do so in the middle of one of my sentences, hoping that it leaves them wondering if it was accidental or if they had cut me off
- My favourite one is if they ask me something like "what natural gas provider are you dealing with now?" ........ I will respond with "What colour panties are you wearing?" ... and if they sound shocked I say "Well you asked me a personal question, so it's only fair"

I have tried a couple of different things... The first thing is "I am not interested" then they always have a response to that so I say "Hey, I said I am not interested so I can just say good-bye and you nicely let me go or I will hang up on you and this is your choice". When they try and talk about selling you stuff again you say "Ok you made your choice and then hang up"... The other thing I do is: If they are continuously persistent I say "Ok I am very interested but there is one important thing, You have to pay the bill". That usual changes their mind about selling me anything.

Ask for their home phone so that you can call them later. Then go to www.donotcall.gov/ and eliminate some of those calls.
Then get caller ID and don't answer any calls that come up as unknown or blocked, that will eliminate a bunch more, Then when one gets through say no thank you and just hang up. If you're nice, that's the hardest one, practice it now.
Go to you phone pick it up and say, No Thank You, and hang up, repeat until it just feels right.
Good luck.

Tell them to hold on a minute and put the phone down and make them pay for the long distance phone call while you leave them there waiting.........they will not be calling you back. They are supposed to be on a timed call, as short as possible because the company pays for the call. If its one of those recorded calls as soon as you notice its one start repeatedly pressing the # button and it will kick your phone number out of there system.

Tell them you are busy right now. Ask for a number to call them back when you are free. You could also them to hold on for a minute while you get a pen, and leave the phone.

I thought that a great many of your answers are really cool! But, all I do is screen my calls. I have caller ID on my phone, and there is a little window. If I do not recognize the name and/or number in the little window, I do not answer the phone! *sm*
