European women do not bind their feet.

It was a custom practiced on young females for approximately one thousand years in China, beginning in the 10th century and ending in the early 20th century (early 1900's). The binding didn't hurt but they couldn't walk very well.

People will do anything for perceived beauty.

I can only imagine that their pain was immense. The history of women's rights museum in Seneca Falls New York has examples of what the feet of women actually looked like after that torture. The bones were terribly deformed, walking must have been almost impossible. The same was true for women who wore tight corsets that were laced, their entire rib structure was changed, their internal organs were pushed out of place as well. What a horrible thing, to think that women were only considered acceptable if they were small waisted with tiny feet. Shame on the people who condoned such savagery.

European women did not bind their feet, that was Chinese women that did that. And it was very painful, many of the upper class women were crippled and had to have slaves to carry them about.

It is horrendous pain. Their feet would be small, but badly damaged, sometimes where they couldn't walk. Their feet would curl up and resort into deformity. What's the meaning in having small feet, but you can't even take your shoes off to show them because they are so deformed!?! Its one thing if you are born that way, but to do that yourself!! I don't understand it. But the pain is pretty bad, no joke, you have to be a toughie to endure it! Hope I answered your question and given you some info.

A lot! Not just pain, but crippling and life long, irreversable damage. Humans sure do some crazy s**t. I have not heard of them doing it in Europe though...only China, but it could be possible that the trend extended to a small number of people there.

This was a Chinese custom, not European. As to the question itself, I have no data.
