I suggest any of the quartet of books by Tamora Pierce. Starting with the "Song of the Lioness" Quartet, then "The Immortals" Quartet, "Protector of the Small" Quartet and "Circle of Magic" Quartet. The first two series are adventuresome and involve mystical creatures and magic without necessarily cutting out real consequences.

The book trilogy "The Wind Singer" is awesome, as is the trilogy called "Abhorsen". The first book of the Abhorsen trilogy is called "Lirael". They're by Garth Nix. This trilogy sounds right up your alley, dark without being brutal, fantasy without being too weird. "The Wind Singer" is the first book in the "Wind on Fire" trilogy by William Nicholson.

If you liked Eragon read the second book - Eldest - by Christopher Paolini. The third book should be out soon.
For a change try Traveler by John Tweleve Hawks

Also try any of the books by Sara Douglass. I think they too are really good. She has many series. My favourite is probably the Crucible. But alot of people love the Wayfarer redemption series.

While I love Tamora Pierce, I probably wouldn't recommend it to you, as it hasn't got what your after. Her books are based in Medieval time and about female heroes. They do deal with adventure, fantasy, but also has romance. Not what you're after.

Have you tried the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman? The first is "The Golden Compass."
