My stepdaughter turns 16 in a couple of months. She lives with us 24/7 now - no contact from her mom for over a year :-( Due to situations beyond her control, general shyness and her life situation, she doesn't have a strong circle of friends her age. She's got cousins around her age, but they're family and, even then, they're not really close - hang out at family gatherings, but not outside of them.

I want to do something special for her 16th birthday, anyway. I'm thinking something like skydiving, a spa weekend, rock n roll fantasy camp, a date with Jack White or Johnny Depp ;-)...

We can't really afford anything more than a couple hundred dollars. We're in the Chicago suburbs.

If this were you, if you were about to turn 16 & in a similar situation in your life, what would you want to do to mark the special day?

Every 16 year old girl is different since her birthday is a couple months away you should ask her, but not continuously. Take a few notes. ask her what she'd like to have if she did have a party.

Most teen girls are down to earth and don't want seriously expensive stuff.

I for one am obsessed with giving a nice piece of jewelry for the big 16th birthday. I think that would take a large chunk of your budget, but if you are careful only $100, and with the rest I would take her out somewhere very nice where she will be treated with VIP treatment, the cake, song whole 9. You don't want to embarrass her if she's so shy, maybe she can give some ideas so its not such a shock

It really depends on her and her personality.. when I was 16 I would have loved a spa weekend but shes probably at that age when she wants to be with friends... if she doesnt have that many like you say ask her if shed like to have a party it might be a good opportunity for her to invite the other girls from school over and meet them.. if she doesnt feel comfortable with that idea.. i would always love a good shopping spree and something eventful like you were talking about that i could wear my new outfit to!! there is a lot going on in chicago!

I would start off by having 16 pink roses delivered either at her work or even at the house. I would also ask her what it is she would like to do. She knows better then what we do. If she is shy, doing some big flashing thing may make her feel bad, and you don't want that. Maybe have her friends all go and catch a movie, or the family take her out to eat at the restaurant of her choosing. It sounds like she is the type that's not going to care how much money you spend or how flashy it is, she just wants to know she is appreciated and loved. Good luck.
