this is an excellent question my friend!
:-)
Well philosophically, the changes we mostly undergo in Life are relevant to our current environment(situation or routine).. therefor we dont even know ourselves weve changed. only & if only a change of setting takes place that we'd notice such transformation.
When i left the Philippines 5 years ago, im so much of an anti-social(very much a loner). My parents often hug me but i never liked it., but i do spend time with them & some few friends(who made the first move 2 get 2 know me). But my Job here in Bermuda as a waiter obliged me to change my way of dealing people. Gradually i learned to adapt with my 2nd home. My jpb is mainly service & Tourism, subtly i didnt notice that ive become friendlier & more tolerant of others(due to the variety of people i meet on the day 2 day basis)... i was surprised when i went back home. Just when i landed off the plane, i was the one who strike conversation with the next person inline on the immigration. i have never done it in the past...
So when i saw my family waiting for me when i got out of the airport..i gave them the warmest bear hugs i can give..
only this time, i initiated it. & it felt good that somehow, being away ironically changed me for the better.
:-)

I like this question.... in a clever way it highlights how we seem to be wary of change and yet, how we can not put up with 'no change' either!!

My experience regarding going back to a place has been just the opposite.... I went back to my hometown after several years and was aghast to see almost everything changed.... I started anxiously exploring what, if at all, was the same to give me some nostalgic memories.... and finally I found just two things that had not changed..... a school building where I had learned my first lessons of the English language (I still recall the teacher and his meticulous concern for accurate grammar and spelling).... and a banyan tree on the main road from which I used to pluck a few leaves once a year, for my mom to make a particular dish on a particular festival day... the leaf being smooth and non-stick is suitable to spread the doe on and cook it in a pressure-cooker... once cooked, the stuff can be easily peeled off from the leaf.

nothing ever stays the same always change
in a time and place ,where you have been , done things you have done, lived a certain way in a time past, you can go back there but it will not be exactly the same , you have altered and changed , enjoy the place time or whatever for the moment because once it is gone you cant ever get it back exactly the way it was before , you can dream of the way it was , but it will not be the same

Yes, the things around you don't change as much as you change to accept them. You cannot control your external influences but you can learn to deal with them on life's terms. So if you go back to some place in your past that hasn't changed, you will have that altered feeling. It's telling you that you have grown and changed. This is a good thing!

Sure everytime I go back to the first house I ever lived in (which by the way isn't in the U.S) I see it exactly the same as we left everything. The only thing that was different was that everything was bigger because I had grown a bit. Everyone I knew saw me differently family members etc.
It was kind of a weird feeling but at least I knew that I grew because at the time I was only 4
