I work with this guy who's married and goes to the bar and occasionaly tries to pick up women.Sometimes,the women turn him down,but when they do give him the time of day,he chickens out and runs away from them.Why does he do this in the first place if he's so worried about his marriage ?

he may not do this because he wants to cheat on his wife but it sounds to be he's just trying to see if he still has it.

Because it's fun. Some people need the ego boost. I find that many men will flirt with women just to know they "still got it," either not realizing or not caring that the women are taking them seriously.
Usually people that have to have their "ego cup" constantly refilled aren't very secure people to begin with.

maybe is is just trying to make sure that he is still alive...some people feel invalidated at home a lot by their spouses, and they look for the 'i'm still alive' feeling from others...
maybe he is testing the waters and getting his feet wet...trying to ease himself into it again...
either way, it's wrong...
