I think it has to do with self motivation. Just because your a slow learner does not mean you will not make it in life, look at our president.

Intelligence is a continuous trait, just like height. Some people are smarter than others. They were given genetic advantage coupled with an environment that stimulated them. Like height, intelligence is mediated by the environment; if you do not " feed " it, it will not grow to it's potential. On the other hand, for those that were not granted this advantage; " You can not make a race horse out of a pig, but you can make a very fast pig ".
People will tell you many silly things about intelligence. How there is such things as " emotional intelligence " and that all have the same potential. This is not the truth, but an ideological ploy for what they think is a moral benefit. It is " the truth that sets you free ", though.

Well its not that they aren't smart. Most people who are considered "dumb" just learn slower or differently than others. And sometimes people just learn slower in a certain subject or matter.
Like my friend is very smart, except for when it comes to math and thats just because that part of her mind doesn't comrehend that certain subject. Its not that she is dumb, its just she can't learn it as well as a lot of people.
Age doesn't really matter if someone has the brainpower to be technically smarter. If you are fast learner you have the capability of learning ahead of elder people. Its all up to a person themselves how smart they can be. You can train your brain to learn a certain way. Thats why they have different tutors and education places that teach you different ways of learning.
I hope I helped answer your question. :]

Intelligence, like aptitude for physical strength, varies from person to person. Reasons range from genetics to a gift from God. Some people work harder than others to develop their gifts and make the best use of them. Some people, independent of intelligence, simply make bad choices. Observe those around you and you'll get a pretty good idea who falls in what category. No human chooses their body or mind. Each human chooses what to do with what they were given.

If you think about it, even the difference between the smartest person & the dumbest person you ever met is really not that far in the greater scheme of things. You are probably giving your sister too much credit & her friend too little.

Actually everybody is born smart. It's just that how much they utilise their mind. All people have the same number of neurons in the brain, but when someone stimulates their brain to think, the neurons activate and become more. Futhermore, good IQ is 90% effort and 10% heredity.
