this didn't happen as far as i know. but, lets say a doctor/nurse walks into a patients room that's on life support and trips over the cord that powers the life support and as a result kills the patient.... what happens to the doctor/nurse?

Accidents happen. They can be sued but anyone can be sued for anything. By the way, the cords have locking plugs so they do not accidentally pull out without using two hands to deliberately remove them. So your situation is unrealistic.

It's not possible as there are several "chords" powering various machines that controls the life support systems. And even if the doctor/nurse did manage to turn them all off...they would still have the opportunity to turn them back on before the individual dies. So if the patient did die as a result of the doctor/nurse's actions....then it would be considered homicide because of all of the above facts.

They sell the story to Hollywood and it gets used in one of the T.V. medical drama shows. The hospital's insurance company settles with the patient's family by giving them a seven digit payout and reprimands the doctor or nurse - who really don't care because they now have a big buck contract as a medical consultant on the show they sold the story to.

They would get sued for negligence. That is what would happen. It is very unlikely that the suit would be successful because of the burden of proof that is required for a judgment. Also, health care corporations' employees act in collusory manners with regards to potential negligence claims.

It's unlikely, but they could be charged with involuntary manslaughter. It wouldn't be medical malpractice since tripping isn't a medical act. More likely it would end up a civil wrongful death suit.

Tripping over the cord is an accident so no crime is committed. However, it would be medical malpractice so they could be sued...and so could the hospital.
