What I am asking is that when you call someone a Samurai does that mean that they have a Sword or can they be a Samurai and use hand`to`hand Combat

The sword or Katana was an integral part of the Samurai's identity.

the answer to your question is no......

a weapon doesn't make you a samurai. there were samurai who didn't even use swords they used other types of weapons.

being a samurai is a class and a way of life.

try reading the Hagakure it's a book that explains everything from the way of the Bushido to whatever else you want to know about Samurai. (it's not that big so it's a fairly easy read)

"Samurai" or "Bushi" means "Warrior", a warrior don't need a weapon to be a warrior.

The Samurai with sword theme was popularized during the Edo era.

if they specialize in hand`to`hand Combat there not a Samurai they'd rather not but Samurai's are forced into hand to hand Combat somtimes.
