that has been painted before and has a bit of rust? I think some of the 'galvanized' chemical has worn off and I'm not sure what kind of primer and paint is the best.

You've got to get all the old paint and primer off first. A good stripper will do that. The next step is to sand the metal with 120 grit wet or dry paper, keeping the surface wet while sanding (no electric sander here---BZZZZZZZTTTT). When all the rust is gone, wash and dry the metal and immediately put on a coat of primer for whatever finish you will be using (oil based for oil paint or laquer for laquer based paint. After that dries, then you put on you color coats, preferably several thin coats. If it looks like you need a heavier coat when you painting, don't do it now, put t on after it dries. You may want to put on 2 or 3 light coats and then scuff the surface with 200+ grit finishing paper then lay on some more color coats. Sand again with even finer grade sandpaper and then rub it out with compound. After you're done this step, put a coat of car wax or polish on it.That should give you a nice finish on your project that will protect it for years to come. Good luck.

You have to use a good primer first. Oil primer is the best - it takes longer to dry but it sticks better to metal than latex primer. Sand drip edge before priming. Use oil paint for your final instead of a latex paint although there are some latex stains that apply and look just like paint that stick and last real well on metal. Cabot solid stain is one of the best ones and you can get it ay certain paint stores or at Home Depot

Go to the local lumber/building material store and buy some metal roof paint. It generally comes in 5 gallon buckets, has a lot of tar-like content and is made for this purpose.

galva-prep and a good exterior metal acrylic paint.
but why on earth paint a lovely metal anything that is getting old and nicely patina'd...you will just have to paint it again in a couple of years and every couple of years forever and forever for the rest of your life and it can make life miserable having to do that...
