The engine will not start unless I pull the coil wire off and hold it about a quarter inch from the distributor cap. When it starts, it dies as soon as I plug the wire back on. It will run as long as I hold the wire about a 1/4" away. Can anyone give me some help with this?

Odd situation. You may want to try a new coil and coil wire. It sounds like it is getting grounded out when you plug it in. good luck.

Put in a new cap and rotor, and ship it.
