A no-hitter is defined by Major League Baseball thusly: "An official no-hit game occurs when a pitcher (or pitchers) allows no hits during the entire course of a game, which consists of at least nine innings."[1] By this rule, a pitcher who throws fewer than nine no-hit innings (for example, a no-hitter called on account of rain after seven innings) is not credited with a no-hitter, and neither is a pitcher who throws nine no-hit innings but gives up a hit in extra innings. This rule was instituted by MLB's Committee for Statistical Accuracy in 1991, and resulted in several pitchers who had thrown no-hitters of fewer than nine innings being stripped of credit for an official no-hitter.[2]

Only if the game has gone long enough to be official, that is - 4 1/2 innings if home team winning, 5 if home team losing. Because of this, a pitcher could actually only pitch 4 innings and get credit for a no-hitter, provided he was on the visiting team and had somehow (walks, errors, etc.) given up a run.

This rings a bell, Paul Byrd april of this season. He has a no hitter going through 4 2/3 and was 1 strike away from being an offical game before the game was canceled.

no he doesn't. i remember Devern Hansack for the Red Sox pitched a no-hitter for 5 innings due to rain, but it wasn't an official no-hitter because i guess the rule states that a no-hitter has to be a complete 9 innings.

Is the game called before it would be official (after 5 innings in a 9 inning game) you could call it a no hitter.

i think it should be called a no hitter cause and it depends on how far into the game if it is the first inning or second or third no but if it is like four it should be counted cause if the hitters cant hit off him then they probaly wont hit off him.
