Don't exactly know what caused it, but get RIT whitener and britener for whites. This should solve it with no ill effects. That usually takes care of any problems I have. And If you have any whites that are starting to just look a little dull, this will brighten them right up.

If you think you have something in your machine, which is possible, before you wash anymore laundry, you need to get the machine clean. The best way to do that is set it for a medium sized load, fill it with warm water and a little detergent ( about 1/2 what you'd use if there were clothes in it) and maybe a little (about 1/2 cup) of bleach. Let it run completely through a cycle just as if you were washing laundry. If it was just in the machine, not your pipes, that's all you'll need to do to keep it from happening again. If it's your pipes, I'm not sure what you should do.
As for fixing the clothes, if they're all solid white, you could just put them back in the machine after it's been cleaned. Wash them with warm water, soap and about a cup of bleach. Also, make sure when you add the fabric softener that you pour it into the water and not directly on the clothes, because sometimes fabric softener will cause spots.
The soaking method that "Bill" mentioned also sounded like it might work for getting rid of the spots.

First, although powdered detergents are cheaper, liquid works better, generally doesn't leave stains and is better for your machine. But if you do use powder you need to start filling the washer, put the powder in, let it dissolve and then fill it with the clothes. You probably had clumps of detergent that sat on the places where you found the stains. If you are also using a drier, there's no need for a liquid fabric softener unless you are drying them on a clothes line. Drier sheets soften just fine. Note: When using liquid detergent, you should also start filling the water, then add detergent till it dissolves and then add the clothes, but there is less chance of staining if you do not follow these directions.

soak them in a mixture of 2 cups vinegar to one gallon of water, with the water being as hot as the clothes can take. let soak overnight, then wash with no detergent. If they are completely white clothes (no color at ALL), a half cup of dishwasher detergent (electrosol type) as well as a half cup of borax (40 mule team borax sold at most stores) should do the trick. For colored clothes, use a color safe bleach alternative such as clorox II or oxyclean with the borax. Chlorine bleach will take out the color and can actually CAUSE yellowing in some fabrics. If there is any yellow left, hang out in the sun for a while to finish bleaching them out. Hope this helps! :)

Rewash them with no laundry detergent. Some detergents leave discoloration if it has direct contact with the clothes. Next time put it in with the water first before adding your clothes.

you might have rust in your pipes ( get a water filter) or you might just be using to much stuff in your laundry. If the detergent clumps together on one spot it could cause yellowing. try to use liquid detergents next time

Some fabric softeners can cause spotting. Read the label on the fabric softener and most of the time it'll have instructions on what to do when there is spotting.

Did you add the soap & let the washer fill up with water, before you added your clothing? The powdered soap has to be dissolved in water, so it can wash the clothing properly.
