It's probably just because it's your first time and you aren't used to using them yet. I wouldn't worry, you'll get used to it soon.

Sure. You have muscles at the opening of the vagina that contract when you are nervous, which you probably were. Tampons can be inserted easier with a lubricant during the learning phase. Use something waterbased like KY Jelly. AVOID using vasoline or lotions. They can lead to vaginal problems by intefering with normal discharge.
Also, use the lowest absorbancy that will meet your needs. Start with junior or slender regular (Tampax makes these). Be sure to change it every 4 to 6 hours maximum. Wear a panty shield for back-up.
In no time you'll be a pro at using this convenient method of sanitary protection. Relax.

Edit: I doubt the hymen was involved as most girls break it long before the first period through normal activity like riding bicycles, etc. It is just your muscles constricting. It is fine to try again this period. No healing needs to take place. Also, be sure you push it high enough past the muscles so that you no longer feel it. Then it is in the right position. Read the package insert for more help.

yup pretty much, the first time, if you aren't sexually active, then you likely tore your hymen. No big deal, as long as the hurting stopped after you got it in. In future it might help you a bit with insertion to lubricate the tampon first with a bit of KY jelly. Remember never leave a tampon in m ore than two hours, after that the risk of toxic shock syndrome goes waaaay up.

Yep. Take it out and don't use one for the rest of THIS period. You will be fine to use them again for your next one, although there may still be discomfort while you get used to wearing them. First time tampon usage often breaks the hymen--I know it did mine. The reason to take it out and not use them again this time 'round is so that it can heal more quickly.

And an aspirin may help, too. I remember how much that hurt!
