Your cervix can begin softening a number of weeks before labor actually begins. Each woman and each pregnancy is completely different. With my 3rd pregnancy, I began to efface (another term for softening of the cervix) about 8 weeks before delivery and was dilated for 6 weeks before she was born. A softening cervix is just one of the signs your body is getting ready for labor.

ha ha! i bet you wish you were. your cervix is softening because you are getting ready to dilate but if this is your first child, you have a looooong way to go. i would be concerned if you said that you were dilated 2-3 cent. at 29 weeks. there is a whole process involved though. your cervix softens, you loose your mucus plug and then you start to dilate. but if you are worried about premature labor. take it easy

Seems like your Dr. should have explained items better to you. You can have a soft cervix and not be facing or dilating.
And would stay off my feet and lay down as much as possible. I was in and out of premature labor with my daughter from 5mo on. So you can do it.

It most differently can mean premature labor. If I was you I would take as many precautions as possible. Sometimes doctors misread certain things or don't take it a seriously as it should be. I only speaking from experience I was 21 weeks pregnant and I was having lots of vaginal beeding and pain went to the ER on several occasions and they would check my cervix, put me on a contraction monitor each time , no contractions and they would send me home and tell me to take it easy. The last time I went to the ER I was in so much pain (full blown contractions) they checked my cervix this time and diagnosed me as having a incompetant cervix which means my cervix can not carry a baby for 40weeks usually it starts to open around 4 months. they tried to put a mcdonald stitch in my cervix to keep it close, which is a thick string that is suppose to help keep the cervix close untill time to deliver, they also had me on all kinds of IV drip drugs to stop my contractions. Despite all their attemps to stop me from delivering, it was to late a day later I delivered my baby girl who weighted 1lb she took one breath and died. Spoke with several different specialist and they all did not understand how this was missed. So I'm just trying to let you know sometimes doctors can miss things. PLEASE PLEASE BE CAUTION FOR YOUR BABY
