To me it means that you are always here and now. It will always be that way, no matter where or when you go.

I kind of think of it as you bring your self into a place and make it unique. If you were to walk into a room, it would reflect you. However, if I walked into that same room, it would transform into something completely different. I think of it as talking not only about your location but you as a person. Your "spirit" is in that place as well and you being there changes that place. Also, no matter where you go, you will always be the same person. I think of things like losing weight, face lifts, clothes and such. We can transform our appearance as much as we want but the inside will always be the same, right there.

Some people like to think that if they change their location, where they live, who their friends are, their job, that things will get better. The thing they overlook is that the source of their problems may just be them, and they can't ever get away from that. So, in order to solve their problems that is where they should start the "fixing" process, with themselves.

This was my favorite saying for years:

In general it means that the constant in every experience is yourself. The real question therefore, is never "what do I want to happen to me" but "who do I want to be"

In particular it can mean that "This too shall pass" or that whatever situation you are experiencing today will one day be a memory.

It is meant to be a joke....
"there you are" is an idiom sort of meaning "you are basically out of luck"

So the common meaning of the joke is "no matter where you go, you are there..." which of course makes sense.
The joke meaning is "no matter where you go, you're screwed"

Sometimes, it's just meant in humor. Beyond a smile and a laugh, the saying reminds me that we can enjoy life most by staying in the present and living to the fullest. It's a lovely reminder to embrace what we have and not waste away our lives looking backwards and forwards at the expense of what's right in front of us.

It can also mean that anyplace you love is home. :)

I liken it also to one of my very favorite quotes: "not all who wander are lost" by J.R.R. Tolkien.

It means: "You cannot run away from yourself". On more reflective thinking: "No one has the power to steal your identity or your character away for you".
