its got to be yao ming. shaq has fallen out of the top spot because of his age, lack of endurance, and his durability is just diminishing. he is now even close to the dominating force that he used to be. ya he can still score one on one sometimes but it used to be if you lpaeyd shaq one on one he would punish you for forty. now its 15. yao has emerged himself as a willing and able shot blocker, shooter, rebounder, and centerpiece for a franchise. he has the most unguardable shot in basketball with his fadaway and he is very accurate. in each of his seasons he has been one of the top field goal shooters in each of his seasons always being over 50%. its remarkable in fact for how many tough shots he takes. he is a career 82% free throw shooter with over 85% each of the last two seasons. Right now it is yao ming but the up and coming centers are going to be dwight howard and greg oden. i would say stoudamire but he is a power forward on a normal team.

If you consider Duncan a center then him, if not then I'd say Yao because before his injury, he was starting to show signs of dominance. If he bulks up a bit and gets faster, he could become unstoppable since he has a huge height advantage and can actually shoot, something most centers lack. The reason I don't think Stoudamire is the best is because he has the privilege of playing with Nash, who provides easy shots for him. If you look at their series with the Spurs, their suffocating defense took away Nash's passing lanes and made Stoudamire almost a non-factor.

The NBA is really suffering with a lack of quality Centers. It's tough, but I think the best center in the game right now is Amare Stoudamire.

Shaq will always be the ideal center to have for the rest of his career. Sure he's getting old. When he's not hurt he still dominates all other centers in the NBA. Yao will never be able to dominate players like Shaq. He's way too lean. He uses athleticism to get to the ball. Centers are supposed to use their strength to get to the ball. Shaq still is the best at doing that when he's not hurt.

Keep in mind that Duncan is a Center who plays like a PF, He always protects the paint and is always there for the rebounds. Yao is great but just the simple fact that Duncan can do all that while playing 2 different positions makes him better. So Duncan.

Yao, just because Shaq's breaking down. Unless you consider Amare, or Duncan as centers.
