Unless your street racing I would leave your car in "Drive" all the time....if you require more acceleration then just depress the gas pedal. Your car will downshift on its own to "third" and then upshift back into "Drive" when your car is back up to speed. You may feel the car do this on its own on long steep grades as a way to maintain speed. A sudden downshift is probalby not going to either hurt your car or do it much good if its only done occasionally. You really gain nothing by downshifting an automatic for more acceleration. You can downshift to use the engine as a brake on steep grades but thats another kettle of fish. If you like to shift gears get something with a five or six speed and a clutch.

I've own a Toyota van Town Ace from Japan, automatic & 4wd.
i have read some of automatic transmission principles and do's and dont of it. base on your question, shifting your gears from D to 3 is not a good idea & you will not go more paster than you think, because in my understanding of automatic transmission; D instance for drive and the gear will automatically shifting depends on how you press your gas pedal, now 3 instance for to direct you the gear into one specific speed, no matter how you press your gas pidal. i was using this gear when i climbing hells.

You can do the same by depressing the gas. 3rd gear is good to about 87 miles an hour. If you wanted to shift for your self why did you buy an automatic. Down shifting then accelerating wont hurt the automatic. BUT trying to slow the car with downshifting really will kill the transmission.

^ actually, if ure in 4th gear and press the gas, its not gonna change into third - ure wrong. as for asking a guy..i assume ur a guy and u dont know what ure talking about so ure not providing a very good reason for her to do so.
to answer your question...im not actually sure..ive heard both sides and from the grinding sound you may hear a grinding sound. the thing is the flywheel is connected to the transmission and the clutch needs to be released so that the " moving" engine can be disconnected from the "non-moving" transmission when switching gears. by switching when in D to 3rd, i dont think the clutch is being released so everything spins and the gear teeth grind making the grinding sound.
but again im not too sure about this..your best bet is to consult a car specialist/mechanic

No, It does not hurt the transmission of yaris. You do not need to do this anyway, because when you press the gas pedal down, it should change the gear instide the transmission automatically, AND you will feel it.
Ask a guy to help you.

If it is nonetheless below guarantee i could have it towed to a dealership for fix. it is in simple terms approximately impossible for them to declare it is your fault. computerized transmissions have a fashion of self destructing whilst something comes unfastened as they are exceptionally pressurized and extremely complicated. maximum autos have a ratchet kit to maintain that from happening, yet going 80mph could be extra advantageous than that ratchet kit ought to handle which might recommend it is broken and bouncing around contained in the trans. you're maximum possibly going to need the two a rebuild or a sparkling transmission. i'm hoping, to your sake, that i'm incorrect.
