Any animal that is in pain - a wild animal or a beloved pet - can and will bite. That is one of their natural responses to pain.
As horrible as it is to have to see an animal suffer like this, do NOT put yourself in danger by approaching the animal. Keep other people away from it, so it does not get any more stressed. Make it easy for the professionals to do their job when they get there. You don't want them arriving and having to ignore the animal because you have been injured, and they need to perform first-aid on you and call 911 to get you some help.

It's so hard when you can't do anything to help, but please remember this is a wild animal and could very likely injure you if you tried to help it. I'm not sure what animal rescue will do but I have a feeling any other wildlife or law enforcement official you could call would euthanize this animal on the spot. You need to wait for animal rescue to arrive and let them handle the situation. They are trained and prepared for this. Keep an eye on him until they arrive if you can, but at a safe distance. Keep your dogs far away from him as well.

I know this is very distressful for you.... but with an injured animal in your yard. But..... if it is in pain and you try to help it you run the risk of it biting you! Which is the normal reaction of animal in pain..... even one that knows you... let alone one that is wild.
Keep you distance and just make sure that nothing else will harm it while animal rescue comes.

I don't know how they police are around your area. But Around here.. only way they will show up is if your dead. Police are not gonna drop things to go help a wolf or a stray that was struck by a car. If nothing else....they are gonna shoot it..and push it off to the side of the road.

Did you call animal control?
DO NOT attempt to put it into your car, this is a wild animal in extreme pain and it WILL bite you.

This post is so old, I am curious if you can tell us what happened. I assume the worst, considering how injured he sounded to be.

ITs a wild animal and its survival of the fittest
Its natures way of thinning out the over population
Let God decide on its life or death
