Only Satanis, and arguably a few others, got what I was getting at.
does no one read the question details?
I LOVE the Beatles, and the Stones are great, too, but they don't qualify for this category.

The Traveling Wilburys. The members were: Bob Dylan, George Harrison (Beatles), Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne (ELO), and Roy Orbison. Can't get much bigger than that, and they made some great music too. They just re-released the two albums they made in the late 80's early 90's, it all comes in one package. You should check it out. They had some great songs like End Of The Line, and Handle With Care, just to name a couple.
Edit: The Wilburys were very much a super-group. Harrison, an ex-Beatle, Lynne, leader of ELO, Petty, leader of the Heartbreakers, and Dylan and Orbison were both very popular solo artists. Here is a link to their wikipedia page, which has a lot of good info on them.

Looking for a band made up of well-established players from other well-known bands,eh? This one might be a bit back in the day for ya, but Cream fits. Was it the best super-band ever...well, the question is so subjective, any answer is strictly a personal response. Cream was quite excellent as was Traffic. I would still pick Led Zeppelin as one of the best bands ever, but I'm not sure they fit your criteria as I think the members of Zep all came from much smaller bands prior to bringing on the Led.

A super group is defined as a band made up of members from other, established bands. My fave(s) are Tomahawk (Faith No More, Melvins, Jesus Lizard and Slayer) and Fantomas (Mr. Bungle, Melvins and Slayer.

The Beatles. Everything they did was taken by bands all over the world. You can say they made a music genre, Psychedelic Rock. They are an amazing band and will always be.

My opinion is "The Eagles" bar none. There aren't many other bands that write their own music and lyrics, can sing five part harmony, play more than just their respective instument, and cross the boundries of labeling. I don't think they should be catagorized, or labeled. They simply write good songs, allow them to be what they are, and put their souls into it. And they're still playing just for the pure love of creating "music". Not doggin' any one else, they're just so ' the whole package'.
