If you go online you will find there are only about 12 states that allow common law marriage and even they come with rules, like time together, having people stand up for you and other laws. It isn't just about living together for certain periods of time. What is the issue with marrying properly? If you want to be with a person, the commitment of marriage is important to your life, your kids and their names, and who you really are. If not you are still shacking up.

Sorry, nothing in Cali. If you want the same rights as married people, get married. If not, and you don't want the responsibility of a marriage, you're in the right state. You can play house forever here.

It's useless. If you want benefits as in social security, tax breack why not get married. If you stay married for 10 years, you get a cut on his social security otherwise nothing. Except Medical Coverage from his current employer as domestic partner.
