SS numbers are issued at birth to US born citizens. If the card has the same number as the one issued to you 18 years ago, what are you waiting for?

If you received it later in life, still sign it now so that you can begin receiving benefits. For instance, if you begin putting money into the system now (part time or fulltime) then if you become totally disabled in several years, there is money to use for your care while you get better.

Seems to me (I might be wrong) but I think I got mine at 16. I remember my friend getting a job where her mother worked and she encouraged me to get my SS card and I was a junior in high school. Maybe things have changed now, not sure. I do know that parents these days get a SS card for their newborns so they have some kind of ID number. You'll have to check online to be sure.

I'm 15 and have signed mine. The DMV required that I sign it in order to get my driver's permit.
