If you really want to get in deep, not the "Record Industry emo", check out the Velvet Underground. They wrote about drugs, transvestites, death, and a lot much more. (and this was the F*cking 60's, where the hippies were all like, "Utopia, dudes!") Check them out, and **** the music industry!
