Compressor cost depends greatly on the efficiency of the unit, a minimum unit, say 12 SEER is half the price of a 16 SEER unit. High efficiency units are probably not going to be able to use the old evaporator, coil in the furnace, though.

You can probably go to the manufacturer's website with the existing outdoor units info and try and see if they have any pricing available. Usually there are nameplates on the units with all the specification info you will need. Just a rough estimate, based on the size of your house I would say you would need about a 4-Ton unit (48,000 BTU's). $4000.00 doesn't sound too conservative of an estimate.

depends on what you get and who you buy it from and also who installs it for you i would contact a different companies and get quotes on them before you buy anything
