Just wondering how many calories are in it to see how many my baby consumes.

Not counting calories, just curious. I'm gonna be breast feeding til she's about 1 year old. Currently she'll polish off 1 large jar of solids a day, one small one of solids a day and various snacks, (couple of crackers, arrowroot cookies or banana), sometimes some mashed potatoes or mashed veggies of my plate as well as a few bottles of water, juice througout the day. At night she feeds off the breast and once or twice a day. Just wondering how much that all is. It's amazing how much they eat LOL.

Formula has 20 kcal per ounce. Breast milk varies from mother to mother, but 20 is still an average figure. A cup is 8 ounces, so 20 x 8 = 160 kcal or Calories with a capital C.

A young infant under 4 months requires 55 - 60 kcal per pound (110-120 kcal per kg) body weight. Thus a 12 pound baby requires about 720 kcal per day or 36 ounces of breast milk or formula. These are approximate figures for guidelines. Actual amounts vary from infant to infant. As the infant gets older it needs fewer Calories / kcal per pound body weight.

Breastmilk changes, not only from woman to woman, but from feeding to feeding, and even within that feeding.

The milk at the beginning of a feeding is thinner, more watery, and lower in fat - it's called "foremilk" .
The milk at the end of a feeding is richer, creamier, and higher in fat content - it's called "hindmilk".

The mother's diet, the age of the child, how frequently the child nurses - all that will change not only the calorie count, but the nutritional make-up of the breastmilk that the child is getting at that very moment.

It's about 20 calories per ounce. There is 8 oz in a cup so about 160 calories.

hello Jessica,

Indeed..i breast feed my daughters till they were 1year old and realy enjoyed it,infact it is difficult to see how many calories thay get..but they are growing that is all that matters..i used to worry they were not getting enough..and then i gave them water in between feeds in the summer months..(they licked on an ice-cube)which gave my breast a rest as it can be quite exausting..once we ran out of milk and i added my milk to my husbands coffee..he said it tasted like "carnation milk"!!
Go with the flow and do not listen to stories, all that matters is that you and baby are comforatble..only thing about breast feeding is they do feed longer juring the night time ..but it helped me get back to normal..atho did not have period for over a year.

That depends on the babies needs. Breastmilk changes as your baby grows. What it consists of, the calories....all of that change as your babys needs do.

20 calories per ounce. Same as formula.

Enough to satisfy your baby. Don't start putting body-image issues on her now. She's too young. Babies don't over eat, so DON'T COUNT HER CALORIES!
