Yes.

You cannot make sweeping generalizations about a person based on the group(s) they are in and possibly be accurate.

There have been studies by social scientists that have shown that when people look at people that don't belong to the same social groups as they do (race, ethnicity, culture, clubs, etc.), they tend to not see individuals. They tend to think of those 'other' people as being more all they same as those in group that the person belongs to.

That has to do with why it happens.
It is unfortunate.

I actually laugh at them, and also realize it applies to us all. If I hear ethnic jokes, I realize that the stereotype applies to everyone. I laugh at my own shortcomings, and do NOT take stereotypes and ethnic jokes seriously, though I realize many people do, unfortunately.

Yeah, I think it is the quickest and easiest way to make yourself look ignorant and uneducated.

Just speaking in general of course =)

Yes, but I think we all use them to some degree (see there is one right there), if we are able to group people together it becomes easier to rationalize whatever point we are making. it does not make it right....
