Yes it is.
Every fishing boat has a name for good luck usually a Female one.
Remember the Andrea Gail in the movie the Perfect Storm?

I dont know about naming, but I have an uncle who was the captain on a boat that when it was Christened the bottle didnt break and the boat sank within 3 months. The company recovered it, it sank again. Renamed it, rechristened it (the bottle broke this time) and it has been fine for over 5 years.

No ! My boat has no name, and has assisted the U.S.C.G. in a Rescue, and plucked many people out of the water from capsized boats on, including 2 dogs (they fell of a dock and could not get back up), a currant wound in fishing line, etc.. hardly bad luck ! on the inside gunnel (port side), my boat proudly display's "Rescues + + +"

May not be considered bad luck, but imagine the fun of just throwing a bunch of letters on there and watching everyone try to figure out what the hell it stands for!!

You don't want it to sink do you? Decide on a temporary name place stick on letters on a board and tie it to the transom. Something like Happy day... Then the next happy day is when you sell it.
