Suspended Over a Sidewalk
The flag may be suspended from a rope extending from a house to a pole at the edge of the sidewalk, the flag should be hoisted out, union first, from the building.
From a Staff Projecting Horizontally or at an Angle
The flag may be projected from the window sill, balcony, or front of a building, with the union of the flag placed at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half-staff.

I'm not sure if there is necessarily any place proper or not, following that the flag does not touch the ground, and oh, yeah... my pet peeve: flags are *not* supposed to be flown at nighttime unless there is a light on it. There are apparently a lot of people who don't know this, judging by the number of flags I see left on houses in the dark.

I don't think it matters where you display it as long as you follow the guidelines. Don't let the flag hit the ground. Take it down if it rains. And if you leave it up at night, it should be illuminated.
Thanks for caring enough to look into the proper way to respect our flag!

On the right side if hanging from a pole or rod.
If mounted vertical, stars on the top left, stripes on the right.
If mounted vertical (longways) stripes on the left running down,
and stars on the right.
Flags that are removed at sundown is fine.
Flags that hang day and night require a light at night.
Flags on a pole, showing mourn, are displayed half-mast.
Poles with multiple flags. The U.S. flag on top, others below.
Multiple flags are not to be flown for commercial purposes
even though car dealers somehow get away with it. Many
have died for our right to display our flag. thanks :-})

Somewhere prominent. Since Bush was appointed President in 2000 I need constant reminders of which Country I live in (feels more like the old Soviet Union to me).

I'd think you could display it wherever you like provided it complies with your local zoning laws.
