RE: "always outnumbered, always outgunned saw the gradual transformation of Socrates from a learner to a teacher"

According to the above review, this book is a continuation on the same character. So why not start by making that the subject of your introduction? It still deals with "change" but more specific to where the main character originated and how he develops in this new book.

If you want to start with a general concept on change, I would mention how "the only constant is change" or "the more things change, the more they stay the same." Then lead into how Walter Mosley's character Socrates Fortlow has developed or changed or transformed over time.

So I would keep the universal theme of "change" but start over and write something more clearly focused on this book. Otherwise, I think what you have written is too general, and does not say anything "moving" the reader toward the topic.
