I really don't understand why the school and the district make a big deal about kids bringing their cell phone to school. It not like they are going to use it during class, and if they do I have no problem with them confiscating it. I think it okay to bring phone to school if the phone is turn-off all time. It best for younger kids to have a phone around due to the facts with today society. Does anyone agree with me?

The reason it always turn-off because I do not want her to use during school time but when she get out of school she need to take the local bus home and it for her to call my in-laws up to pick her up from the bus stop and for her to call me up and tell me she is safe. And sometime it best during school trip in case she do get lost and she can contact someone right away.

In my days there wasn't much pediophile but now there seems to be everywhere.

I do agree with some of the people about some kids do abuse and take advantage of it. It really depend how parent teach their kids. I teach my daughter not to take advantage of the phone and she don't.

I don't understand why people don't understand my statement. If the phone is being taken advantage of cuz it needed to be taking away. But there are kids who are very responsible and we as a parent need to do things to prevent things from happening.

I see things in different way if a kids taking advantage of a phone and use it during school in session, yes it wrong, but the parent should have taught the kid better in life and obeying the rules of having a phone.

But if a kid is very responsible why not give them a phone for in case of emergency.

I agree- technology is here to stay, and parents have the right to send their children to school with a phone. This is a good safety feature for the child, and good for the parent.

It is nice that you acknowledge that the phones should be off during school hours (perhaps an exception for recess), and that the phone would be confiscated if used during class.

This is a concern to the teachers and school board because so many children do use them in class for text messages. Therefore- using a phone during class should have consiquences, just like cheating on a test, and if the parent needs to buy a new cell phone (or pay a re-issue fee of $100 to the school) to replace/reissue the confiscated phone then the problem will be much less.

Cell phones are here to say, and trying to find solutions to their place in today's society is very important.

Great question- perhaps someone will read your question and make some changes.

I recommend writing out your best solution and send copies to the school, school district, Department of Education, and your Congressman/woman to make a real change happen.

This is a great forum- however if the ideas don't make it to the proper people then great ideas go to waste.

Thank you- good luck

This is one of the reasons that I don't teach in middle school or high school. I do have a son that is going to high school this year. He has a cell phone, but does not take it to school. There is no reason for hime to use a cell phone to call during th school day. If he needs to get in touch with me, he goes to the office. Also, if he is doing something after school, the adult in charge usually has a cell phone. The problem with your argument is that a majority of the students that have cell phones use them during the day. And yes, if a student used a cell phone and I saw it, I would confiscate it. the purpose of going to school is to learn; not to sit there and play on a cell phone. They are the worst things to come along besides the radios in the lunch boxes.

im not trying to be rude

i also used to think the same way to you about the phone rule, being a past student in high school i hated that i couldnt bring it to school because of the idiots that play on theirs in class. in my head i was thinking "its not fair.. i always keep mine off"

but then i realized.. as long as my phone is off they wont say anything.. and hey.. they wont even know

basically.. the school wont even know that she has it unless she is playing with it.... and then there wouldnt be need for this question

as far as if she should have a phone in the first place, 12 is a young age... ive had mine stolen twice from school

once when the teacher told us she'd lock he door and didnt
another time a locker was broken into

there are kind of a lot of chances of it getting stolen. if she carrys a purse maybe but think about it.. middle school gym class, recess..

No, there are phones in the school if they need to get ahold of their parents, and people in the office who you could call , if you wanted to get ahold of them. I consider all the things that are necessity's for life, and a phone ranks way down there with a whole lot of other media things that consume a child's valuable time , and keep them from breathing fresh air , and learning things that will aid them to grow and mature into adulthood. Here's a line I scarfed from some where, ( Stop the Insanity)

If the phone is going to be turned off, why take it to class? And what happens if they lose it or someone borrows it and runs the minutes up or they don't give it back? There's been many a time that school lockers are broken in to. I say leave it at home.

i dont know if your daughter is a good listner or not, but i agree whit you 100% but as a 8th grader i had a cell phone as did many of the other students. the kids would go into the bathroom or even use it durning class with there heads on the desk. so they would be used in the educational hours.

I agree with you and my 12 yr old stepdaughter is allowed to bring her phone to school as long as it stays off during school hours. Safety is a must these days.

Depends on the case. Does she need to call her parent for a ride? Will other kids try to use it and get her in trouble?
Logically it may seem safer to have them with it but it isn't necessary is it?

oh yeah, i totally agree with you. nowadays since whats going on in our society, its good that kids have their cellphone. so that they can contact their parents anytime if something happen, or in any emergency situation. but the thing is. students must turn there cellphone off when they are inside the classroom cause it is really disturbing. students cannot really concentrate in the class if they wont turn it off.
i think that's a good idea that students must bring a cellphone but they must turn it off or put it in the Principal's office then just get it after class. :)

Well, everyone does it, its great in case of emergency, no ones going to use it during class or anything, so I see no harm in doing that. I definitly agree that RESPONSIBLE children should be able to do it.
