Those "special" brush cleaners are not worth the investment.
One of my makeup artist friends told me to gently wash my brushes in warm water, making sure to keep the brush hair on the bottom and upright, so water doesn't seep into the rest of the brush. She also said to take a little bit of whatever you use as face cleanser, and to rub it between your fingers, then onto the brush hair gently. Rinse THOROUGHLY!! You don't want and soap left in the brush. After that gently pat down with a towel [it won't harm it] then lay on a paper towel to dry. It should be good as new the next day. =D

A woman at a department store cosmetics counter told me that you should always wash a good (expensive) brush with baby shampoo and let the brush part stick out to dry on the edge of something. I first squeeze a paper towel around it then I lay mine on a keenex box with the brush sticking out . She also added to rinse with a cheap conditioner, as most expensive brushes are made from real hair, but I very rarely ever use the conditioner.

M.A.C has the best brush cleaner. It's pricey but your brushes will be so soft and like new when they dry.
The cheaper alternative is Johnson's Baby Head to Toe Wash.
Dip them in warm water, swirl the bristles ONLY in the cleanser, rinse under warm water, and dab with a paper towel. Let them air dry. NEVER SOAK THEM.

First, rinse with warm water. Then use a hand soap or baby shampoo to clean them. Use a towel to make sure that they point the right way and let them air dry. Do this every few weeks.

you can buy makeup brush cleaner from brands like mac, or just clean them yourself. you should use lukewarm water and some type of soap like baby shampoo, but I personally use facewash like cetaphil or eucerin, since after all, it's going to be all over your face. Baby shampoo can be good for your brushes if the bristles are natural.

I just swirl my brushes in some warm water and then let them air dry - don't try to dry them with a towel, you'll ruin them.

For good brushes, it's recommended to wash them with shampoo, just like you would wash your own hair.
